Bad parenting contributes to increase in criminal activities – Motivational coach

A motivational coach, Mr Michael Alumona, has attributed the rise in criminal activities in the society to bad parenting.

Alumona made the assertion in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Saturday.

According to him, criminals wreaking havoc in the nation are all products of poor parenting.

He said: “The problems society is having are all traceable to failing family system.

“Parents have a crucial role to play in the moral upbringing of their children, so improper upbringing has resulted in increasing societal vices in these present times.

“Parenting is a serious business, every parent need to be intentional, and awake to their God-given responsibility to train their children in the way they should go, so that after they had grown, they will not depart from it.”

Alumona said that some parents are neglecting their responsibilities by engaging in struggle for economic survival, leaving the children to make decisions that could affect their lifestyles.

“It is worrisome to see a lot of parents becoming so busy in pursuing materials wealth and leaving their children in the care of housekeepers, who will expose or engage them to some kind of immoral acts.

“It is not surprising when we begin to see different bad behaviours and habits the children exhibit today in the home front and the society.

“We need to be more involved in what our children are doing on daily basis not only by providing money to meet their needs but also to always find time no matter how busy one is to teach them moral values,” he added.

The coach advised parents to go back to the basics and serve as good role models for their children.

He noted that children learn better by observing their environment, adding that parents should set good examples and practice what they preach.

“Be observant and sensitive, give them a listening ear; be close to them so that they will be able to tell you what they are experiencing outside,” he said.

He advised parents to censor what their children watch on phones so that they would not be exposed to some scenes capable of polluting their innocent minds.

“When children are properly groomed, it will reduce crime in the society. The future of our children lies in our hands as parents, let us be guided,” he said.
