Customs seizes N23.1m smuggled goods, generates N144.8m in March in Kebbi

The Nigeria Customs Service (NSC) Kebbi State Area Command, says it generated about N144.8 million in March as revenue from mostly import of goods into the country though Kamba border.

The Customs Area Controller, Mr Ben Oramalugo, made this known while briefing newsmen on the command’s activities for the month of March in Birnin Kebbi on Tuesday.

He said that the revenue generated, represented 164 per cent of their monthly target despite elections that took place in the month which affected the volume of import of goods into the country.

“Sequel to our series of meetings and interfacing wit all stakeholders aimed at stemming the tide of smuggling and increased revenue generation, the command has recorded a tremendous success in the area of revenue.

” In the months of March under review, we were able to generate a sum of N144.8 million. This represents 164 per cent of our monthly target despite elections that took place in the month which undoubtedly affected the volume of import of goods into the country.

“We are hopeful of meeting, if not surpassing, the command’s annual target of N1.06 billion,” he said.

Oramalugo said that the command was exploring ways on how to address a major challenge identified by the stakeholders of multiple taxation from neighboring countries before their goods arrive at Kamba, the only border currently open under the command.

“The command has also made a seizure during the period under review of 16.375 liters of PMS, 210 cartons of foreign spaghetti, 34 bales of second hand clothes and 109 cartons of confectioneries, among others.

“The duty paid value of the seized items is N23.1 million,” he said.

He, however, warned all smugglers and their enablers in the state to desist from their nefarious acts.

“We will not fold our arms and allow any filling station to be used as a conduit pipe for smuggling PMS out of the country.

“Our government pays heavily to subsidize the product for our citizens which makes it illegal and morally reprehensible for few individuals to divert it for their own aggrandizement.

“We remain resolute in frustrating their illegal ventures as we are morally and logistically equipped and have the gallantry to scuttle all their activities,”Oramalugo said.

The controller, appreciated all well-meaning citizens who helped the command with useful information to nip smuggling in the bud.
