In a bid to address the increasing challenge of student housing in tertiary institutions across Nigeria, the Federal Government has announced plans to construct student hostels in 36 universities nationwide.

The Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), Sonny Echono, revealed this during a meeting with the new leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), led by President Lucky Emonefe.

Echono emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring that a significant percentage of students have access to on-campus accommodation, aiming for at least 50 to 60 per cent residency. He assured that the hostels would be constructed to high standards, providing safe and conducive living environments for students. Furthermore, Echono highlighted the increased allocation for maintenance of TETFund infrastructures in the 2024 intervention cycle, indicating a sustained effort to improve educational facilities in tertiary institutions.

During the meeting, discussions also revolved around enhancing collaboration between TETFund and NANS, with a focus on joint monitoring of projects and leveraging digital platforms to address educational challenges.

Emonefe commended the government’s initiatives and pledged NANS’ support in ensuring the success of educational projects.

Senator Ned Nwoko, a member of the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TetFund, reaffirmed the committee’s commitment to supporting Nigerian students and educational development initiatives.

The announcement comes amidst ongoing efforts to improve access to quality education and infrastructure in tertiary institutions across Nigeria.
