Ohaa Demands Justice, Urges Tinubu to Act Over Shooting of NDC Members in Enugu

The Governorship Candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Enugu State, Sir Christian Chinyeaka Ohaa, has called for urgent investigation and prosecution of those responsible for the shooting of eight members of the party during a ward meeting at Ihuani Awkunanaw, Obuofia, Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State.

Sir Ohaa made the call after visiting the injured party members receiving treatment in hospital, where he said he was confronted with the severity of the injuries sustained during the September 12 attack. The NDC had earlier identified eight members as victims of the shooting, while reports quoting the Enugu State Police Command said armed men disrupted the meeting and opened fire, prompting an investigation.

According to the medical information made available to the NDC, the victims are Onovo Donald, a ward councillor, who sustained gunshot wounds to the head, neck, leg and hand, with five bullets reportedly detected in his body; Maduka Ngene, who was shot in the right hand; and Ogbodo Gloria, who sustained gunshot wounds to the right breast and hand and reportedly still has a bullet lodged in her breast.

Others include Obinna Owoh, who sustained gunshot wounds to both legs, both hands and the chest, with six bullets reportedly detected in his body; Ugwu Nnaemeka, who was shot in the leg, hand and right eye; Nwagbara Chinonso, who sustained multiple gunshot wounds, particularly to the back, with nine bullets reportedly lodged in his body; Onovo Victor, who was shot in the stomach and had six bullets removed during surgery; and Madueke Ngene, a ward chairman, who sustained gunshot wounds to the chest, waist and hand, with three bullets reportedly remaining in his body.

The party said Onovo Victor has already undergone surgery lasting more than four hours, while other victims with bullets reportedly lodged in their bodies are expected to undergo further surgical procedures as determined by their doctors. The NDC expressed appreciation to the medical personnel attending to the victims and to their families and party members for providing support throughout their treatment.

Sir Ohaa expressed concern over what he described as the continued absence of a public response from the Enugu State Government and the Nkanu West Local Government leadership concerning the attack. He also questioned the progress of the police investigation, noting that, despite the police statement on the incident, the party was not aware of any arrest.

He said the circumstances surrounding the attack required a transparent and thorough investigation capable of identifying the perpetrators and determining whether anyone sponsored, facilitated or otherwise aided the violence. He urged the relevant security agencies to ensure that the investigation is conducted professionally and that anyone found culpable is prosecuted in accordance with the law.

The NDC candidate also drew attention to Section 215(4) of the 1999 Constitution, which provides that, subject to the provisions of the section, the Governor of a State or a Commissioner authorised by the Governor may give the Commissioner of Police lawful directions concerning the maintenance and securing of public safety and public order within the State.

Reacting to the condition of the victims, Sir Ohaa said: “The sight of our members lying in hospital beds with bullets lodged in their bodies is a painful reminder of the danger of political violence to our democracy. No Nigerian should be shot or injured for attending a peaceful political meeting. We cannot allow violence to become a tool for intimidating citizens or suppressing legitimate political participation.”

He called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the relevant security authorities to ensure that the circumstances surrounding the attack receive appropriate attention and that justice is pursued. He also assured NDC members and supporters in Enugu State that the party would continue to pursue its political activities peacefully and within the law.

“We will not be intimidated. We will continue our peaceful campaign and political engagement while calling for the protection of every citizen’s right to participate freely in the democratic process,” he said.

Sir Ohaa further appealed to Nigerians, civil society organisations, political parties and other stakeholders to condemn political violence and demand accountability whenever citizens are attacked for exercising their democratic rights.

He said the NDC would continue to monitor the condition of the injured members and provide the necessary support for their recovery, while awaiting the outcome of the ongoing investigation.
