LASU receives 10MW solar mini grid from TETFUND

The Lagos State University (LASU) has received a 10-megawatt (MW) mini solar grid project from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) to improve the university’s electricity supply.

LASU disclosed this in a statement issued on its social media platform on Monday.

The statement said the project would promote sustainable power supply and enhance teaching, learning, research and innovation.

It stated that the handover ceremony was held at the project site between the LASU International School and the Faculty of Management Sciences.

The statement said the ceremony was attended by the university’s management, TETFUND representatives, Ammah Contractors Ltd. and other stakeholders.

It quoted the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ayodeji Badejo, as saying that the project was a strategic investment in academic excellence, research, innovation, digital transformation and improved student experience.

Badejo said the facility would also serve as a practical training centre for renewable energy research, technical training, internships and industry partnerships.

She listed solar technology, energy storage, smart-grid management, artificial intelligence and environmental sustainability as areas that could benefit from the project.

In the statement, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academics, and Director of Special Interventions, Prof. Oseni Afisi, commended TETFUND and the project consultants for their assessments and consultations.

It quoted Afisi as emphasising the importance of reliable electricity to effective teaching, learning and research in the university.

The statement also quoted TETFund Director of Monitoring and Evaluation Babatunde Olajide as saying the project was part of the fund’s strategic intervention to address electricity challenges in Nigerian tertiary institutions.

‘’LASU was selected under Lot Six of the 2025 intervention cycle to provide reliable electricity to critical facilities, including ICT centres, laboratories, libraries and health facilities, ‘’ Olajide said.

According to the statement, the project will feature solar photovoltaic panels, battery energy storage systems, power-conversion systems, distribution infrastructure and monitoring systems.

It quoted LASU Registrar Emmanuel Fanu, who expressed appreciation to TETFUND, the university management and other stakeholders for their contributions.

The statement said that the 10MW mini solar grid is expected to complement existing power sources.

‘’It is expected to reduce dependence on the national grid and diesel generators, lower operational costs and improve operational efficiency across the university, ‘’ it said.
