Mind Restructuring: Mindset Of Leadership And Rulership

By Richard Odusanya

Leaders are people who envision the right things, determine the right timing and apply the right resources for execution. The main purpose of a good leadership is that leaders have majority of people following them without any force or coercion behind it. People willingly identified with true leaders to get their team on board to follow them towards the accomplishment of their vision of success. Leaders can arise naturally in any group, it is usually noticed in a person that was freely chosen by credible electoral process, not by rigged or force of coercion.

On the other hand, a RULER is someone who can tell you what you must do. They dictate the rules and you have no choice but to follow them. You can attempt to not follow the rules and the group of people they have convinced that they should have the right to order other people around will come at you in force and imprison, harm or kill you. This is a tragic phenomenon and similitude of what we are all witnessing presently.

For a very long time in the history of our beloved country Nigeria, our dear nation, in the words of Prof Attahiru Jega a former Vice-chancellor of Bayero university Kano and a two times chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission INEC, he had said: “Nigeria has been afflicted by the misfortune of having characters in governance who are essentially clueless about matters of governance who are neither selfless, nor visionary, who are greedy whether for power or money. who are essentially clueless about matters of governance and reckless in the way they handle government affairs.”-

In the circumstances, the position of the erudite scholar, Prof Attahiru Jega cannot be faulted. It was only President Umar Musa Yar’adua of the blessed memory that courageously exhibited the real meaning of leadership. He was selfless, honest, futuristic and pragmatic; apart from adoption of SERVANT LEADERSHIP, he was honest with NIGERIANS concerning the issues of our fraudulent electoral process, that was rigged in his favor in the 2007 general elections under the leadership of Olusegun Obasanjo in connivance with Maurice Iwu. In his inauguration speech on May 29th 2007. He publically repudiated the process, even though he was the major beneficiary, and subsequently put in place the Justice Mohammed Uwais committee to overhaul the entire electoral process. Unfortunately, after his demise we are back to ground zero.

In sharp constraint to the SERVANT LEADERSHIP mantra, as popularized by President Umar Musa Yar’adua, the characters that emerged from within us as leaders “RULERS” today, are majorly dealers and oppressors, very recently precisely two Months ago, a bewildered nation that earned surplus of about 400 billion dollars from just one source of revenue alone was told that we are not a wealthy nation and the borrowing from china will continue; whereas the same government officials and their collaborators in the private sector have chosen to live in opulence using their ostentatious lifestyles to justify that they are the lord of the minor, it has gone beyond the era of motorcades to the display of private jets competition in the same country that its citizens going through untold hardship occasion by irresponsible leadership. 33.3% of unemployment rate, Job lost, hunger, killings, kidnappings, banditry to insurgency and others including trust deficit arising from poor leadership.

The ELITES are UNITED, while the masses are at each other’s throats divided by ETHNICITY, RELIGION and TRIBE. It is a clear validation of “Don’t die in their war” in the words of Dele Farotimi. We have also been told by no less a personality of the Vice-president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Prof Oluyemi Osinbajo, that: “God will do a new thing in Nigeria. We can’t depend on those we know for Nigeria to change. A critical analysis of such defeatist statement coming from topmost number two citizen who was at the forefront of the CHANGE mantra and given the pragmatic statement of Sen Hillary Rodam Clinton when she visited us in Nigeria, over a decade ago. In a town hall meeting where yours truly was privileged to be part of the audience, the former first lady and at that time secretary of state of the United States of America, she had said: “It is up to you the good people of Nigeria who desires visionary and purposeful leadership to choose between vibrancy and complacency.”

In the circumstances, it is truly up to you and I as a people bond in unity, to resist the trend and demand for a national rebirth thus avoiding the illusion of “god will do it” or “god will jump down to fix Nigeria” this is a clear deceitfulness, it is the language of most of the religionists who usually delude themselves and deceive the gullible masses. God is not a magician; he created us in His own image and fully equipped us mentally, physically and emotionally. Even when the entire HUMANITY was threatened, Elohim reminded Moses of the rod in his hand, He didn’t have to jump down. So therefore, it is almost likely that REDEMPTION will come sooner than expected. But if we fail to rescue our country Nigeria, the verdict of history, verdict of posterity and the judgment of God Almighty will be very harsh on all of us. DRY BONES SHALL RISE AGAIN.
