Police corporal arrested for fatally shooting Abia businessman
In Abia State, the arrest of police corporal Obagi Njok has sparked outrage after he allegedly shot Emmanuel Okocha, a businessman, dead in the Abiriba community of Ohafia Local Government Area.
Residents claimed that officers from the Rapid Response Squad of the Nigeria Police Force fatally shot Okocha along MCC Abayi-Aba for refusing to bribe them despite having complete vehicle documents.
According to a statement by the state Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Maureen Chinaka, Njok was attached to the Abayi Police Division at the time of the incident.
Chinaka disclosed, “The officer has been apprehended, and necessary disciplinary procedures have been initiated.”
She further stated, “Appropriate disciplinary actions and sanctions will be effected soonest, and he will face the full course of appropriate administrative and legal consequences.
AIn this regard, representatives of the bereaved family and stakeholders will be carried along as the proceedings progress.”
The Abia State Police Command expressed regret over the incident and extended condolences to the deceased’s family, friends, and well-wishers.
They emphasized their commitment to upholding professionalism and the rule of law while condemning any act of misconduct among their officers.
