Red Cross donates hygiene materials to inmates in Yobe
The Nigerian Red Cross Society, Yobe Branch, has donated hygiene materials to inmates at the Potiskum Custodial Centre of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) in the state.
The Yobe Red Cross Branch Secretary, Alhaji Mai Garba, disclosed this on Friday, in Damaturu, at the commemoration of the 2026 World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day.
The Voice Media Trust (VMT NEWS) reports that the celebration has its theme: “United in Humanity.”
According to Garba, the visit is aimed at improving the hygiene and sanitation conditions of the inmates.
“The team, during the visit to the NCos, interacted with its officers and inmates to evaluate other humanitarian needs within the facility, especially in the areas of healthcare support, water supply and hygiene materials,
“The branch, had earlier paid an advocacy visit to Yobe Command of the NCoS on May 5 to seek approval for the humanitarian outreach
“The Comptroller of Corrections, in Yobe, Ortsergah Terver, granted the branch access to the Custodial Centre and directed officers to provide required support to the humanitarian team.
“During the visit, the humanitarian mandate and operational principles, particularly in protecting the dignity of vulnerable persons in custodial facilities were explained,” he said.
Garba promised that the branch would continue to canvass more support for the inmates, through relevant authorities, development partners and humanitarian organisations.
“As an auxiliary to government, we will continue to embark on interventions that will improve their living conditions,” he said.

Garba further promised that the branch will strengthen collaboration with Yobe State Road Traffic Management Agency (YOROTA) to improve emergency response and road safety management across the state.
He said the society had earlier organised practical first aid training for YOROTA personnel on May 7, as part of activities marking the World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day celebration.
“The training covered bleeding control, fracture management, casualty evacuation, handling unconscious victims and emergency communication procedures,
“The training was designed to improve the capacity of road traffic personnel to respond effectively during accidents and emergencies,” he said.
He added that the collaboration would further promote safer roads and timely emergency interventions across Yobe.
