Scavenger Sentenced to 3 Months Imprisonment for Stealing 4 Bicycles

A Senior Magistrates’ Court in Karu, Abuja, has sentenced 26-year-old scavenger Abdullahi Umar to three months imprisonment for stealing four bicycles worth N400,000.

Magistrate Lami Sani, who delivered the verdict, did not offer the convict an option of fine and cautioned him to desist from committing crimes in the future.

Umar, a resident of Nyanya Pantaker, Abuja, pleaded guilty to a two-count charge of criminal trespass and theft.

The prosecution counsel, Ayotunde Adeyanju told the court that the complainant, Mr Lawrence Ezaka of Kabayi, Mararaba, Nasarawa State reported the matter at the Karu Police Station on Oct. 16.

Adeyanju alleged that Umar stole four bicycles valued at N400,000 from the complainant’s shop located at Kugbo, Abuja.

Adeyanju informed the court that the bicycles were found in Umar’s possession during police interrogation.

The prosecution counsel also revealed that Umar was an ex-convict with previous convictions for similar offences.

The offence contravened sections 348 and 288 of the Penal Code. (NAN)
