State Of The Nation: The Search For A New Nigeria (2).- ‘RIGHTEOUSNESS’

By Richard Odusanya

“Righteousness exalts a nation, sin is a disgrace to any people” “At one moment I might speak concerning a nation or kingdom to uproot, to pull down, or to destroy it; if that nation against which I have spoken turns from its evils, I will relent concerning the calamity I planned to bring on it or another moment I might speak concerning a kingdom to build up or to plant it; if it does evil in my sight by not obeying my voice, then I will think better of the good of which I had promised to bless it.”

When cultures or nations go off the deep end, when they become corrupt and brutal, the problem is not just about leadership alone; it is a fundamental issue rooted and anchored on falsehood and deceitful mindset. A man may tell lies a thousand times but it only takes one day for the truth to catch up with him. There comes a time when truth will prevail!

Nigeria is like a nation built on quicksand and now that it’s crumpling, everyone is crying. There is a generation of leaders who have done everything to ensure the ruin of Nigeria. They led us here.

If you have ever wondered how the Soviet Union could have killed upward of 60 millions of its own people or how Communist China could have purged upward to 100 million of its population, or how Hitler arose to power and Nazi Germany exterminated some 6 millions of Jews and others, the wrong answer would be that (only) the leaders were corrupt and everyone else was a pretty good person. or, that, the good people really didn’t know what was happening.

25 Prisons closed in Holland because no criminals to fill them.

Righteousness exalts a nation not worship centers full of fraudulent minds, questionable characters and hypocrites who now hide behind religion to swindle some unsuspecting and gullible masses. They put fear in the people, prophesy wrongly, and manipulate people spiritually, only to be succeeded by their family members in a matter of spiritual importance.

When criminals profit from criminality, crime will definitely increase. This is also true of a system that rewards criminalities like the present situation in Nigeria- where it has been elevated to the level of Statecraft. When a group of people believe that they are untouchable and have the mandate to rule forever, it becomes inevitable for the downtrodden to complain and murmur which is usually interpreted as rebellion.

It is not all about leadership. The followers also have responsibility. If the majority of the followers are docile, easy to manipulate and unreasonable, what you get is not going to be different from the present situation. When genuine public opinion is stifled and we all pay the price for our silence and ineptitude.

Even before the advent of the two dominant religions into Africa, our forefathers saw the following as anathema: Stealing, telling lies, adultery drunkenness and immoralty to mention a few.

How and when did we get it wrong? No wonder, righteousness exalts a nation. The truth is the only thing that builds and make a nation great, greatness built on lies will ultimately lead to sorrow, tears and blood.

“History will have to record that the greatest tragedy of this period of social transition was not the strident clamour of the bad people, but the appalling silence of the good people”

“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice anywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. He who passively accepts evil without protesting against it is really cooperating with it.”-Martin Luther King Jr.
