Suspected pirates kidnap 7 maritime travellers

A group of seven maritime travellers are feared to have been kidnapped by suspected pirates along the Onne estuary.

The incident took place on Monday as unsuspecting travellers embarked on a journey to Port Harcourt by boat.

Following the incident, the Rivers State Police Command acknowledged the occurrence and confirmed the news on Tuesday.

Grace Iringe-Koko, the Public Relations Officer of the Rivers State Police Command, shared in a telephone conversation that a total of 20 passengers were on board the boat at the time of the attack.

“Yes the O.C Marine informed me that a boat carrying 20 passengers from Bonny to Onne was intercepted by daredevil sea pirates along the Onne River where they were robbed before 7 of them were abducted and taken to an unknown destination,” she said.

While it remains uncertain whether the seven kidnap victims were specifically targeted or chosen randomly, the Rivers State Police Command assured that they are conducting an investigation into the matter. Additional information will be provided as the investigation progresses.
