The Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), Arc. Sonny S.T. Echono, has been named among the prominent awardees of The Sun Awards 2026, securing the prestigious Public Service Personality Award.
The announcement was made in an official statement signed by Onuoha Ukeh, Managing Director/Editor-in-Chief of The Sun Publishing Limited (publishers of Daily Sun, Saturday Sun, Sunday Sun, Sporting Sun, and thesun.ng).
The award places Arc. Echono alongside other notable public service figures, including Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho (Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority), Dr. Aminu Maida (Executive Vice Chairman/CEO of the Nigerian Communications Commission), and Dr. Kunemofa Asu (Director of Finance and Accounts, NDDC).
Recognition as a “Nation Builder”
Under Echono’s leadership, TETFund has been celebrated as a key engine driving infrastructure delivery, accountability, research initiatives, and institutional reform across Nigeria’s public tertiary institutions. Unlike previous editions traditionally held at the beginning of the calendar year, the management of The Sun Publishing Limited announced that the 2026 award presentation ceremony has been brought forward to November 2026. The adjustment comes in anticipation of the upcoming general elections scheduled for January and February 2027.

- Man of the Year: Governor Hope Uzodimma (Imo State)
