The Search For A New Nigeria (7) Beware Of Leaders Without Vision

Jonathan Michael Bowman J.D., an American national leadership keynote speaker and section chief at the Attorney General’s office in California succinctly captured it this way: “A leader without vision, is like a piano player without a piano or a kite without wind.”

Leaders without visions are like champions without scars. They are usually very desperate for everything: power, money and women. They are very manipulative, deceptive and crafty. They could walk on corpses and dance on graves in the effort to attain their desires or actualize their individual inordinate ambitions.

These are the types of leaders that emerged from discredited and fraudulent processes. They are very selfish, greedy and crafty. The good people of the African continent and the developing world, particularly Nigerians that suffer from underdevelopment are their victims.

Many of the so called leaders are agent of the imperialists. They collaborate with the oppressors and recruit trained Africans into well oiled nefarious systems. The main purpose is to satisfy the selfish and greedy interest of very few people who then set in motion policies and tricks to shortchange the local system.

As a result, they become richer than the nation itself, and reduce a once prosperous nation to the poverty headquarters of the world. They loom large. Their boys and girls are rewarded with fantastic headship of global institutions, while the gullible masses and so many of our citizens wallow in abject poverty. Meanwhile the economy is destroyed, and yet, the gullible masses continue to defend their oppressors, knowingly or unknowingly.

This is the harbinger of a situation whereby the poor got home (if at all they have any), and there’s no constant light; no access to pipe borne water; no food for the family members; can’t pick their bills; battle total infrastructural decay; and are contending with insecurity facilitated by poor leadership.

Therefore, as we continue in the “Search For a New Nigeria” and the process of rebuilding our dear country, we must do everything possible to restructure the process of electing our leaders and the mindset of our citizens so as to prevent the pitfalls of the past.

At this point, as we celebrate the Eid-al-fitr with our friends, brothers and sisters, it is a time to reflect on the past and the “Way Forward” believing in the benevolence and mercies of God. Let’s discharge our responsibilities as citizens, and ensure that we get the right sets of leaders that will put the interest of the generality first, and above self-interest – leadership that will rise up above self-limitation and personal aggrandizement.
