Thompson-Herah beats Fraser-Pryce for women’s 100m gold in Jamaican sweep

Elaine Thompson-Herah led a historic Jamaican sweep for back-to-back Olympic women’s 100 metres gold, clocking the joint-second fastest time in history.

Thompson-Herah pulled away in the closing stages as she ran 10.61 seconds to beat Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce.

Fraser-Pryce had been bidding to become the first woman to win the blue riband race three times.

She had 10.74 and Shericka Jackson completed the first-ever sweep by one country in the event in a personal best 10.76.

Only American world record holder Florence Griffith-Joyner has run faster than Thompson-Herah with her world record 10.49 seconds in 1988.
