Turkish, Latvian defence ministers discuss cooperation

Turkish National Defence Minister Hulusi Akar arrived in Latvia Thursday to discuss ways of strengthening bilateral cooperation and regional security, the Latvian Defence Ministry has said.

At a joint news conference with his Turkish counterpart, Latvian Defence Minister Artis Pabriks said that Latvia was interested in military-industrial cooperation with Türkey.

The meeting between the two defence ministers covered a number of topics concerning bilateral military-industrial cooperation, the Latvian minister said.

He said that Turkish military was among the strongest on the continent.

On his part, Akar described the talks with his Latvian counterpart as constructive and added that they talked about the situation in Ukraine.

He expressed support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity, saying that Türkey was against escalation of the conflict and would want the conflict to be resolved in a diplomatic way.

Türkey, officially the Republic of Türkiye, is a NATO member and involved in strengthening Baltic security by participating in a NATO-led air-policing mission.
