World Cup: Argentina stun England 2-1 to reach final

Argentina produced a dramatic late comeback to defeat England 2-1 in a gripping FIFA World Cup semi-final and secure a place in the tournament’s final.

Voice Media Trust (VMT NEWS) reports that the encounter was played at the Atlanta Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia, United States.

Both teams approached the contest cautiously, displaying defensive discipline while creating promising opportunities during an evenly contested opening period without finding the breakthrough.

England midfielder Elliot Anderson became the first player cautioned after receiving a yellow card in the 37th minute for a late challenge.

Argentina defender Lisandro Martinez entered the referee’s notebook five minutes later following a robust tackle as midfield battles intensified before the interval.

The first half ended goalless, leaving both sides with everything to play for after an entertaining but tightly contested opening 45 minutes.

Argentina’s disciplinary concerns continued after the restart when Cristian Romero received a yellow card in the 51st minute for a reckless challenge.

England finally broke the deadlock four minutes later through Anthony Gordon, who calmly converted Morgan Rogers’ pass to give the Three Lions a deserved advantage.

Argentina responded by introducing Nicolas Gonzalez for Leandro Paredes in the 64th minute, seeking greater attacking momentum against England’s organised defence.

Both managers reshuffled their teams in the 72nd minute as the contest entered its decisive phase with tactical adjustments on both sides.

England replaced goalscorer Gordon with Ezri Konsa, while Argentina introduced Rodrigo De Paul, Gonzalo Montiel and Nicolas Otamendi to strengthen their challenge.

Argentina made another attacking change in the 81st minute, sending on Lautaro Martinez for Nicolas Tagliafico in pursuit of an equaliser.

England responded a minute later by introducing Dan Burn and Niall O’Reilly for Reece James and Declan Rice to preserve their slender lead.

Argentina’s persistence was rewarded in the 85th minute when Enzo Fernandez finished confidently after Lionel Messi supplied a precise pass.

“We kept believing until the end,” Fernandez’s composed finish appeared to declare as Argentina restored parity and reignited hopes of reaching another World Cup final.

With extra time looming, Argentina completed a remarkable turnaround deep into stoppage time through substitute Lautaro Martinez.

Martinez struck in the 90+2nd minute from another superb Messi assist, sparking wild celebrations among Argentina’s players and supporters.

Rodrigo De Paul received a yellow card in the 90+4th minute after committing a late foul during England’s desperate search for an equaliser.

England made final changes in the 90+6th minute, introducing Ivan Toney and Marcus Rashford for John Stones and Djed Spence, but time proved insufficient.

Argentina defended resolutely during the closing moments before the final whistle confirmed a hard-earned 2-1 victory and progression into the FIFA World Cup final.

Messi delivered another influential display with two assists, while Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez scored the goals completing Argentina’s memorable comeback.

England’s hopes had soared after Gordon’s opener, but the late collapse ended their dream of reaching the World Cup final.

Argentina will now prepare for another FIFA World Cup final, while England must regroup ahead of the third-place play-off.
