Yobe Govt partners with Action Against Hunger, EU, AFD, others to launch RESILAC*2 project

Yobe State Government has restated its commitment to strengthening access to basic services, livelihoods, and social inclusion opportunities for displaced, returnee, refugee, and vulnerable host communities.

Acting Secretary to the state government, Dr Muhammad Goje, stated this while declaring open the Yobe kick-off workshop and launching the RESILAC 2 Lake Chad inclusive economic and social recovery project.

Represented by the permanent secretary administration and general services office of the SSG Alhaji Modu, the acting secretary to the state government said the inauguration of the state steering committee of lake chad inclusive economic and social recovery project is a collective journey towards rebuilding and transforming lives of lake chad basin population particularly in Yobe state.

Dr Goje explained that RESILAC 2 is a five-year subregional project aimed at strengthening the resilient capacity of the people to economic recovery, social cohesion and sustainable development in the most crisis- and climate change-affected areas in the Lake Chad Basin.

The acting secretary to the state government urged partners to contribute meaningfully towards the success of the project in economic recovery, sustainable development, cross-border trade, climate adaptation and improved agricultural systems.

Dr Muhammad Goje outlined that the steering committee is saddled with the responsibilities of providing operational and technical direction to ensure accountability for the project performance, decision-making, among others.

Earlier in his welcome address, the country representative of action again hunger, Mr Andualem Fekadu, said the project was launched to recover from years of destruction by the activities of insurgents in the Lake Chad basin, pointing out that partnership and determination are key to the project’s success.

Mr Fekad stressed the need for collective efforts in the recovery process among development partners and donor agencies towards achieving a lasting change in the most crisis-affected communities in Yobe State.

Action Against Hunger country representative further highlighted that support from the European Union and ACF has renewed the face of resilience and commitment in the post-insurgency recovery agenda.

Mr Andualem Fekadu added that the Lake Chad basin faced numerous challenges of climate change, conflict and economic stress, hence the need for collective efforts from government, partners and people of the affected communities.

In their separate remarks, the coordinator of the national consortium, Mishealia Bwala, EU head of cooperation, Masimo de Luca and the country director for CARE Nigeria, Dr Hussaini Abdull, said the project components focused on three thematic areas, including access to basic services, advocacy on regional coordination and a transformative gender approach.

According to them, the project will be implemented in three Lake Chad countries of Chad, Cameroon and Nigeria with a total of forty million euros to consolidate on the findings of RESILAC 1.
