Yobe State Governor, Hon. Mai Mala Buni, has commended the state-owned Microfinance Bank for maintaining financial stability and driving local economic growth despite severe security and operational challenges.
Speaking today in Damaturu during the maiden Business Community Development Day and official product launch organized by the institution, Governor Buni noted that the bank’s performance has fully justified the state government’s financial investments.

He recalled that during the peak of regional insecurity, many commercial banks shut down their branches, inflicting severe economic strain on the state and its residents.
In response, his administration strategically reinforced the state’s Microfinance Bank to keep essential financial services accessible.
Under the management of Managing Director Prof. Sheriff Almuhajir, the institution has expanded into one of the country’s leading microfinance banks, securing regulatory endorsements and growing customer confidence. Supporting this trajectory, Prof. Almuhajir revealed that the bank’s capital base surged from N14 million to over N800 million, alongside disbursing more than N100 million in customer loans. He pledged to further build on these operational achievements in coming years.

To deepen financial inclusion and empower local enterprises, the bank officially unveiled a suite of new products, including electric motorcycles, home solar energy solutions, wallet accounts, POS channels, ATM cards, and dedicated banking cubicles.
Governor Buni expressed confidence that these offerings would enhance business capacity and service delivery across the state.

The Governor also praised the local business community for its resilience, emphasizing that state government infrastructure projects—such as new road networks and modernized markets—will continue to foster a conducive environment for sustainable economic growth.
