Youth group seeks stronger consumer protection in telecom sector

The Oodua Youth Coalition (OYC) group, seeks for stronger consumer protection of Nigeria’s telecommunications sector, citing concerns over data usage and subscription billing practices.

The group’s Vice President (Administration), Mr Olatunji Adejuwon, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ibadan on Wednesday.

Adejuwon, who is also the immediate past Assistant Secretary-General of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), urged regulatory authorities to intensify oversight of telecommunications and pay-TV service providers operating in the country.

He stressed the need for greater transparency in data billing systems and subscription models to ensure that consumers receive value for their money.

“Consumers have raised concerns about data consumption rates and the billing structures adopted by some service providers,”Adejuwon said.

The OYC official urged the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and other relevant agencies to strengthen mechanisms for addressing consumer complaints and enforcing compliance with industry regulations.

He also called on youth organisations, labour unions and civil society groups to advocate policies that protect the interests of Nigerian consumers.

Adejuwon further challenged telecommunications operators to improve service delivery, network quality and customer experience.

He said that improved competition among operators would benefit consumers through better services and more affordable pricing.

The youth leader also urged government to implement policies that would encourage local enterprise development and promote economic growth.

“Supporting indigenous businesses and strengthening consumer protection frameworks are critical to building a more resilient economy,”Adejuwon said.

He reaffirmed the group’s commitment to advocating policies that safeguard consumer rights and promote accountability in service delivery.
