ZAMFARA DISINFECTS MARKETS, POULTRY FARMS TO  TACKLE BIRD FLU


The Zamfara Government has commenced statewide disinfection of bird markets and poultry farms to disallow the entry of avian influenza into the state.


Speaking at the opening ceremony in Gusau on Wednesday, Dr Ibrahim Abdullahi, the Commissioner for Forestry and Livestock Development said the gesture was purely precautionary.


He said that the state government took the bold step to disinfect markets and farms as a proactive measure against the disease.


”We received the information of possible outbreak of the disease from neighboring countries including the Niger Republic.

”We decided to be proactive. Remember that bird flu is highly pathogenic, it affects human directly,” he said.
The commissioner said that the Gov. Bello Matawalle-led government was committed to sustainable agriculture and massive food production.


”Apart from the disinfection of markets, we shall also ensure effective monitoring of the borders,” he said.Also speaking, the Commissioner for Information, Alhaji Ibrahim Dosara said the state government would embark on an aggressive sensitisation campaign on the issue.


”We shall let the people know about this, they have to be part of it too. We have to work together to repel this disease from entrying the state.


”I am urging corporate bodies and individuals to support the programme, it is for our collective benefits,” he said.
