Zamfara distributes 206 trailer load of relief materials to IDPs—Commissioner

The Zamfara State Government has on Friday said that it has distributed 206 trailer load of assorted food items and non food items to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and other vulnerable groups in the state from December 2019 to date.

The State Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Hajiya Fa’ika Ahmad disclosed this in Abuja at the ongoing four-day workshop for review the state’s Social Protection Policy (SPP) implementation framework.

The VMT News reports that the workshop was organised by the Save the Children International (SCI) through the Child Development Grant Project (CDGP) funded by Foreign and Commonwealth Development Office (FCDO).

Thirty participants drawn from Zamfara political office holders, civil servants, officials of SCI,  those from Civil Society Organisations and the Media representatives attending the workshop.

“From December 2019, when I was appointed as Special Adviser on Humanitarian Affairs to Gov. Bello Matawalle to date, we distributed 174 trailer load of assorted food items and 32 trailer load of non food items to IDPs and other vulnerable groups across the state”

“We also distributed empowerment tools worth millions of naira to IDPs, unemployed youths and women across the state.

“This is in addition to other intervention programmes initiated by the state government such as Zamfara Social Intervention Prograramme (ZASIP) and Women Empowerment Programme which has reduced the poverty rate in the state “, she said.

“I am happy to inform this gathering that because of these interventions, the state poverty index has reduced from 91 to 73.8 percent.

“I think, this is one of the great achievements recorded by the present administration in tackling poverty and vulnerability in the state”, the Commissioner said.

Ahmad reiterated the state government’s commitments to continue promoting social protection activities in the state.

She commended the SCI and FCDO for funding and implementing of various development programmes in the state.

According to her, with the establishment of the Ministry for Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development in the state more social protection programmes are on the way.

In his remark, the National Programme Manager, GDGP, Mr Ajumobi Kayode commended Zamfara Government for singing the SP policy and currently drafted SP bill.

Kayode also appreciated the state government and other stakeholders for providing enabling environment, support and cooperation to the CDGP projects in the state.

He assured continued support to the statement in an effort to reduce poverty and vulnerability among the citizens of the state.
