TETFund Interventions Revitalizing Education: Ex-Lawmaker Commends Tinubu

By Hannatu Lot

Former lawmaker Mr. Oghene Egoh has lauded President Bola Tinubu for allocating N2.5 billion in TETFund intervention for each Nigerian public university, polytechnic, and college of education.

Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Sunday, Egoh, who previously represented Amuwo-Odofin Federal Constituency in Lagos, stated that this fund release signifies the Tinubu administration’s dedication to revitalizing Nigeria’s education sector and restoring faith in public tertiary institutions.

Egoh highlighted how frequent and extended strikes by lecturers have significantly degraded educational standards in Nigeria.

He noted that over the past 15 years, these strikes have created considerable uncertainty for students, often leaving them unable to predict their graduation dates. This instability has, in turn, pushed many Nigerian students to seek education in countries like Ghana, the Republic of Benin, and Uganda, where academic calendars are more predictable.

While acknowledging the negative impact of strikes, Egoh refrained from solely blaming lecturers, pointing out that their salaries have not kept pace with inflation and the current economic realities.

He explained that governments often enter into agreements with lecturers that are seldom implemented, leaving them with strikes as their primary recourse.

Egoh expressed his belief that President Tinubu’s intervention will bring stability to the education sector and put an end to industrial disputes, demonstrating the administration’s genuine commitment to resolving long-standing educational challenges.

He further added that the President’s passion for national development has been translated into tangible actions, recognizing that a functional and adequately funded education system is crucial for sustainable development.

The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has announced that each university will receive N2.52 billion, polytechnics N1.87 billion, and colleges of education N2.05 billion as part of the 2026 intervention cycle.

This funding is intended to enhance infrastructure, research, and technology within these institutions.

The 2026 intervention also introduces a new initiative, the Nigerian Research and Education Network (NgREN), designed to improve access to global academic resources and integrate the Tertiary Education, Research, Applications and Services (TERAS) platform into NgREN.
