Nigeria Flags Off AI UniPod at University of Lagos as Nationwide UniPod Rollout Begins

The Federal Government of Nigeria, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), today officially flagged off the national rollout of University Innovation Pods (UniPods) with the launch of the flagship Artificial Intelligence (AI) UniPod at the University of Lagos (UNILAG)

This milestone marks the first in a series of UniPod activations across the country in the coming weeks and months, signalling a decisive shift from policy ambition to delivery at scale under the Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda for human capital development, innovation, and economic transformation.

Backed by over ₦30 billion in public investment, the first cohort of UniPods spans six geopolitical zones and is aligned to Nigeria’s priority sectors. Alongside Lagos, six additional specialised UniPods are being activated across the federation, including: the Agriculture and Food Systems UniPod at Benue State University; the Resilience and Recovery UniPod at the University of Maiduguri, Borno; the Manufacturing and Trade UniPod at Michael Okpara University, Abia; the Green and Blue Economy UniPod at the University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom; the Mining Technology and Resource Innovation UniPod at Nasarawa State University; and the Industrial and Government Technology UniPod at Ahmadu Bello University, Kaduna (ongoing). Together, they represent the foundation of a rapidly expanding national platform that will scale to additional universities nationwide.

The AI UniPod at UNILAG serves as the flagship of this national rollout, and Nigeria’s primary platform for building sovereign capability in artificial intelligence and frontier technologies. It reflects a strategic national response to a rapidly evolving global economy, where countries that invest in innovation, digital systems, and talent pipelines are defining the future of competitiveness and industrial growth.

The UniPods represent a broader transformation in Nigeria’s development model repositioning universities as engines of innovation, enterprise, and job creation, and establishing a clear pathway from research to innovation to enterprise to jobs.

Inaugurating the UniPods, His Excellency Senator Kashim Shettima, GCON, Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria said the national innovation systems reflects a deliberate shift in how universities are being viewed, noting that the citadels of great learning are not only centres of instruction but also “platforms for production, enterprise, and national development. Represented by the Deputy Chief of Staff H.E Senator Ibrahim Hassan Hadejia, H.E VP Shettima said “Projects like this UniPod are an integral part of that delivery architecture where students, researchers, and industry practitioners collaborate to build solutions that respond directly to real economic needs.”

The initiative is being implemented through a Government-led, Government-financed, and partnership-enabled model, bringing together the Federal Ministry of Education, TETFund, the Federal Ministry of Finance, the Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, and the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, with UNDP providing technical support, global expertise, and system integration.

Delivering his remarks, H.E Dr. Bosun Tijani Federal Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy stated that, “For decades, universities such as UNILAG have serve and continue to serve as engines of knowledge but beyond that, as a source of creativity and problem solving. This AI UniPod launch is a contribution towards strengthening their capacity as an institution to become the true engine of creation, problem solving, entrepreneurship and increased contribution to national productivity through application of technology.”

Speaking during the launch the Executive Secretary for TETFund ARC. SONNY S. T. ECHONO, he stated that, “These innovation Pods/Hubs are not just buildings, but they are collision spaces where scientists and innovators meet the engineers, where students meet the mentors, and where the raw idea meets the industrial transformation. By equipping these hubs to meet global standards, we are creating a pathway towards ensuring that the academic world synergises with the Nigerian consumers.”

While inspired by UNDP’s pan-African timbuktoo initiative, which promotes university-based innovation ecosystems across the continent, Nigeria is taking this model further – scaling it through direct government investment into a nationally owned and operational system.

The Governor of Lagos State, His Excellency Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, ably represented by Honorable Commissioner Olatunbosun Alake for Innovation, Science and Technology noted that: “The AI UniPod is not arriving in isolation. It is arriving at the right time, in the right place, within a city that has decided to take innovation seriously. He further stated that “This UniPod must become a living system, not a static space. A pipeline of talent, not just a training center. A bridge between academia and industry, not a silo.”

Speaking during the launch, Ms. Elsie G. Attafuah, Resident Representative, UNDP Nigeria, said:“This is not about innovation hubs – it is about building a system. Nigeria is demonstrating how countries can move from fragmented interventions to coordinated, investment-backed platforms that deliver enterprise, jobs, and long-term economic transformation.”

The UniPods are designed as fully operational platforms for innovation discovery, startup incubation, research commercialisation, and industry collaboration. Early-stage ventures are already emerging, ensuring that the initiative begins delivering tangible economic outcomes from the outset.

The Honourable Minister of Education H.E Dr. Tunji Alausa, ably represented by Professor Suwaiba Said Ahmad mentioned that, “Today’s event marks a bold step forward in our collective resolve to position Nigeria as a leading hub for digital innovation and emerging technology. This UniPod is not merely about infrastructure, it is about unlocking the immense potentials of our young people, equipping them with cutting-edge skills.”

Delivering her remarks, Professor Folasade T. Ogunsola, OON, FAS, Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos, stated: “This momentous occasion represents the beginning of a transformative endeavor that will shape the future of scholarship and drive national progress. We at the University of Lagos are delighted and honoured to be contributing to this movement that will transform not just our country but Africa and the world. Artificial Intelligence is a pivotal force reshaping our world. Its potential to augment human capabilities, accelerate scientific discovery, and solve complex global challenges is immense. This hub, therefore, represents our unwavering commitment to harnessing this transformative power for the betterment of humanity.”

As Nigeria advances its reform agenda and positions itself within a global economy increasingly defined by technology and innovation, the UniPods represent a practical step toward building a knowledge-driven economy – one that creates jobs, supports enterprise growth, and strengthens national competitiveness.
