Sixty-Five Years of Excellence: The OAU Story
Originally established between 1961 and 1962, the university was born out of a strategic vision to fulfill Nigeria’s post-independence higher education needs, following recommendations from the famed Sir Eric Ashby Commission.
On June 8, 1961, the law establishing the university’s Provisional Council was inaugurated under the leadership of Chief Rotimi Williams. Later transformed by the University of Ife Edict of 1970 and a subsequent federal takeover decree in 1975, the institution was eventually renamed to honor the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo.
