Adamawa Chief Judge assures YEDC of legal support

The Chief Judge of Adamawa, Justice Hafsat Abdulrahman, has assured the Yola Electricity Distribution Company (YEDC) of the judiciary’s full support as the company pledges to operate within the ambit of the law.

Abdulrahman gave the assurance during a courtesy visit by the YEDC management team led by the Managing Director, Mr Abdulrahaman Isa, at the State High Court, on Friday, in Yola.

She reassured YEDC of the state judiciary’s commitment to upholding the rule of the law.

“You will have our full cooperation as long as you work within the ambit of the law. Do the right thing and follow the rule of law.

“Most of the cases brought before us shows that you are always on the right side of the law.”she said.

Earlier, Isa highlighted the challenges faced by YEDC in distributing electricity across its franchise areas, which included; Adamawa, Borno, Taraba and Yobe States.

He said that YEDC receives 3.5 per cent of the total power generated nationally, which must be distributed equitably across the four states, while also converting the services into monetary value.

“The poverty line is high, and with insecurity and economic hardship people are focused on basic survival first.

“However, we must deliver electricity services because failure to do so would collapse the value chain and strain economic activities in the region.” Isa said.

He also highlighted the transition from government subsidised tariffs to the current service reflective tariff structure, saying it was a difficult adjustment due to energy theft and vandalism of infrastructure.

“The shift came at a difficult time when resources are scarce, leading to widespread energy theft, vandalism of infrastructure for economic gain by some individuals, and even assaults on our personnel.

“In spite all these challenges, we are grateful that when we appear before the courts, we receive justice. We appreciate Your Lordship’s role in ensuring fairness.” he said.
