Nigerian Army reiterates importance of training in combating insurgency

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Lt.-Gen. Faruk Yahaya, has reiterated the importance of training in the fight against insurgency and terrorism in the country.

Gen. Yahaya reiterated this on Tuesday in Ogoja, Cross River, when he flagged off the Nigerian Army Inter Divisions Combat Company Orienteering Competition.

Yahaya, represented by Maj.- Gen Joseph Omali, said that the competition was meant to translate to relative ease in the conduct of operations.

He also said that the competition would enhance the leadership development of junior commanders.

“I urge you all to strive hard in order to bring out the best in the championship and I want to assure you that efforts and preparations for the competition will translate to relative ease in conduct of operations.”

He commended the 82 Division on the choice of Ogoja for the competition, adding that the terrain provided all features needed for training of the nature.

Earlier, Maj.-Gen Umar Musa, General Officer Commanding 82 Division Nigerian Army, acknowledged the emphasis the Nigerian Army under the current leadership of COAS placed on training.

He expressed confindence that the competition would be adventurous and entertaining.

VMT NEWS reports that the five days competition drew participants from six Divisions across the Nigerian Army and Army Headquarters garrison.

The participants are expected to undergo fitness test, 10 and 30 Kilometres run with heavy loads among others.
