NLC protest: We won’t amend constitution without contribution of stakeholders – Speaker Kebbi assembly

The Speaker of Kebbi House of Assembly, Alhaji Abdulmumin Kamba, says that the assembly will not approve any amendment of Nigerian Constitution to pave way for removal of minimum wage from exclusive list to concurrent list without the contribution of all stakeholders in the state.

Kamba, who was represented by his Deputy, Alhaji Buhari Aliero, stated this when he received members and leaders of the Nigeria Labour Congress(NLC), state chapter who staged a peaceful protest to the House of Assembly in Birnin Kebbi on Wednesday.

The NLC staged the protest over proposed removal of national minimum wage from the exclusive list to concurrent legislative list and establishment of state judiciary.

The protest, which started from the Labour House to the assembly complex, was strictly supervised by the Nigeria Police Force and Officers from the Department of State Security Services (DSSS).

“The Kebbi state house of assembly will not approve any amendment of Nigerian constitution to pave way for the removal of minimum wage from exclusive list to concurrent without the contributions of all stakeholders in the state.

“The issues are now before the national assembly, and they have to send it down to all the 36 states of the federation for their confirmation, for their approval before it will be enshrined in the Nigerian constitution.

” I want to assure NLC , especially Kebbi state chapter that we at the house of assembly, are going to partner with you ,to make sure that each issue, if they come to the house, will be given necessary public consideration.

“We are going to to hold a public hearing on it, with all stakeholders on what to be done or to throw it away,” he said.

Kamba expressed pessimism that the people of the state would support the removal of the minimum wage from exclusive list to concurrent as well as establishment of state judiciary council.

“These, we think, will not augur well for the citizens and nation if such laws are amended,” the speakers said.

Earlier, the Chairman of NLC in the state, Alhaji Halidu Alhassan, informed the lawmakers that the removal of minimum wage from exclusive list would compound the problems of civil servants and throw the nation into anarchy.

“We are facing a lot of challenges in Nigeria today, but thank God Kebbi state is one of the most peaceful state in Nigeria.

“But my fellow members, if this removal is allowed, insecurity will be worst than this situation.

“We are not only against the removal of the minimum wage from exclusive list, the issue of establishment of state judiciary must not be allowed too.

“Nigeria is not a one party system; and to be frank with you, if this is established, anybody in the opposition parties will not expect free and fair judgement.

“If today, you are in ruling party, you can be in opposition parties tomorrow. And if you signed a law establishing state judiciary today, it is going to be used and applied for you tomorrow,” he said.

Alhasaan also appealed to the lawmakers to check mate the activities of the oil marketers who were increasing the PMS prices everyday.

“Their actions are compounding the problems of workers and citizens in the country,” the chairman said.
