Police, Lebanese consulate strengthen ties on criminal investigation

The Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex, Lagos, and the Lebanese Consulate in Lagos have strengthened their cooperation on criminal investigations.

The development followed a courtesy visit by the Consul-General of the Republic of Lebanon, Mr Mansour Chaya, to the Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) in charge of FCID Annex, Mr Simeon Akpanudom.

This is contained in a statement signed by the FCID spokesperson, ASP Aminat Mayegun, on Wednesday.

During the meeting, Chaya highlighted the longstanding cordial relationship between Nigeria and Lebanon, noting that many Lebanese nationals reside and conduct business in Nigeria, with several having become citizens through years of integration.

He said members of the Lebanese community continued to contribute significantly to Nigeria’s economic and business landscape.

The Consul-General reaffirmed the commitment of the Lebanese Consulate to deepening collaboration with Nigerian security and law enforcement agencies, particularly in matters relating to investigations and security cooperation.

He also expressed the readiness of the consulate to support initiatives of the Nigeria Police Force, including facilitating visa requests for officers where necessary, in order to further strengthen institutional relations.

Chaya further disclosed plans for a formal follow-up visit aimed at consolidating cooperation between both institutions and improving operational efficiency in handling cross-border cases.

In his response, AIG Akpanudom welcomed the Consul-General and appreciated the visit, noting that it reflected the importance of international collaboration in modern policing.

He reiterated the commitment of the FCID Annex to working closely with the Lebanese Consulate in line with the vision of the Inspector-General of Police.

The AIG explained that the FCID Annex played a key role in criminal investigations nationwide.

Akpanudom called for stronger cooperation in facilitating speedy investigation of cases involving Lebanese nationals, noting existing collaboration through International Criminal Police Organisation(INTERPOL).

Both parties agreed on the need to deepen institutional cooperation and explore a legal framework that would enhance mutual legal assistance between Nigeria and Lebanon.
