Tennis: Kuti conquers Fabunmi at 56th Molade Okoya-Thomas Championship
Top seed player Mathew Kuti on Friday, defeated Mathew Fabunmi to advance to the semifinals at the ongoing 56th Molade Okoya-Thomas Championship in Lagos.
The Voice Media Trust (VMT NEWS) reports that the tournament is being held at the Molade Okoya-Thomas Hall of Teslim Balogun, Lagos.
Kuti secured the win by defeating Kwara’s Fabunmi in a thrilling 3-1 match (1-11, 13-11, 12-10, 12-10, in a quarter-final match.
Kuti secured a decisive victory over fellow Fabunmi in the quarter-final singles match to advance to the semifinal.
After three days of intense preliminary rounds in the Men’s Singles, the semifinal stage begins Friday, Jan. 31.
Speaking with NAN, Kuti said he was happy that he came out victorious in the tough match.
“I am so excited I won the game; I never expected that I would come out victorious. It was not easy, but I tried my best. I narrowly escaped the game because my opponent was a tough player too.
“I trained hard in order to come out triumphant, so the victory is a result of hard work,” he said.
Also, Akinwale Fagbamila from Ondo defeated Omeh Amadi in the men’s singles to advance to the quarter-final.
He said, “I really thank God. It was not an easy match because my opponent, Amadi, is a tough player and number three in the top ranking in Nigeria.

“I am so overwhelmed I won this. I never expected that I would come out best playing the best player; it was not easy,” he said.
He added that the victory would inspire him to work harder because he is going to face sensational Mathew Kuti in the semifinal game.
Similarly, the Coach of Fagbamila, Olakunle Fadoju, told NAN that he was excited about winning the competition, expressing happiness with his player’s performance.
“It’s a testament to our hard work and determination to play well and win. We look forward to other tougher opponents with a lot of confidence,” Fadoju said.
VMT NEWS reports that the semifinals of the Men and Women’s Singles are held today, with the final matches scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 1.
