ZAMFARA ASSEMBLY INVESTIGATES ALLEGED DIVERSION OF PHCs FUNDS

The Zamfara House of Assembly is to investigate an alleged diversion of N1.258 billion given to 2,516 Primary Health Care Centres (PHCs) in the state by the Federal Government through Basic Healthcare Provision Fund.

The money was meant to buy drugs for the PHCs.

This is contained in a statement issued by the Director-General, Press and Public Affairs of the assembly, Mustafa Jafaru Kaura.

Jafaru-Kaura said the investigation followed a motion moved by the Majority Leader of the assembly, Faruku Musa Dosara during the plenary.

Dosara had said the money was released by the agency to PHCs to augment their urgent health care needs.

According to him, each of the PHCs was to get N610,000, but unfortunately only N276,760 was given to them, while over N1.2 billion was diverted.

The majority leader explained the money was for common drugs and some consumables.

He added, “The sum of N500,000 was cornered to a different account domicile in drugs and consumables management agency while each PHC was left with only N110,000.’’

He urged the lawmakers to ensure thorough investigation of the matter so as to unravel the truth about the issue.

Dosara maintained that investigation of fraud as well as recovery of looted money was one of the primary responsibilities of the lawmakers.

The Speaker of the assembly, Nasiru Magarya commended the lawmaker for raising the issue.

Magarya directed the Committee on Health and Human Medicine to investigate the matter and submit its findings in one month.
