Minister inaugurates NEDC mega school in Yobe

The Minister of State for Regional Planning, Alhaji Uba Ahmadu, has inaugurated a mega school built by the North East Development Commission (NEDC) in Potiskum, Yobe.

The Voice Media Trust (VMT NEWS) reports that the four blocks of one-story building contained 96 classrooms for primary and junior secondary schools sections.

Other structures in the school include: administrative block, store, staff quarters, commercial centre, clinic, pharmacy and emergency room.

Speaking at the occasion in Potiskum on Tuesday, Ahmadu commended the NEDC for the gigantic project, which was in line with the North -East Stabilization and Development Master plan.

He noted that two similar schools were also constructed by the commission in Gashua and Buni Yadi towns of Yobe.

The minister, however, said his “ observation” about the project was already communicated to the commission for necessary action.

In his remarks, Gov Mai Mala Buni, who was represented by Alhaji Baba Wali, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), thanked the commission for citing the project in the area.

He said the construction of the school would address massive congestion in classrooms and enhance teaching and learning.

Dr Garba Iliya, NEDC Executive Director Finance and Administration, said the project was sited at Arikime School, which, he said, was the most populous school in West Africa.

“With a population of over 18,000 students, Arikime is the largest school in Nigeria and even West Africa.

“When the management of the commission sat about two to three years ago, we were told that the school ran three shifts in the morning, afternoon and evening.

“There and then the commission gave express approval for the construction of this school to accommodate these thousands of students,” he said.

VMT NEWS reports that the minister had earlier inaugurated the NEDC state office, a multi-purpose hall at Government Girls College, Damaturu, as well as a theatre and Information Communication Technology (ICT) centre at the state university, Damaturu.
