Adamawa introduces special incentives for teacher in rural areas
Adamawa Government has introduced special monetary incentives for primary school teachers serving in rural communities.
Dr Umar Pella, Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Yola.
He said the initiative was designed to motivate teachers, boost morale and address resistance by some teachers posted to rural areas.
According to him, the state government recruited 5,000 teachers in 2026, mainly for the Basic Education programme.
Pella said the recruitment increased the number of primary school teachers in the state to about 18,000.
He explained that about 80 per cent of the newly recruited teachers were posted to rural communities.
The commissioner, however, said that the government had designed special monetary incentives to encourage the teachers and improve service delivery in underserved areas.
According to him, the incentive package also included accommodation support through host community initiatives.
Pella reiterated that basic education, from Primary One to Junior Secondary School, remained compulsory and free for every child in the state.
He said that the state government would soon enforce compliance with school enrollment policies across the state.
“The state government has made it clear that parents who fail to enroll their children in school will face appropriate sanctions.
“However, the rising rate of pupils’ enrollment in schools has been very encouraging.
“The increase in enrollment, therefore, have prompted the government to embark on massive construction of additional classrooms and schools,” he said.

Pella said efforts were also being intensified to maintain a favourable teacher-pupil ratio across the state.
He said the target was to achieve a ratio of between 10 and 25 pupils per teacher in every classroom.
