International Widows Day: Adamawa widows seek government support
The Adamawa Chapter of the Widows Association of Nigeria (WAN) has appealed to government and philanthropists to support widows facing economic hardship and discrimination.
The State Chairperson of the association, Mrs Amina Adams, made the appeal during the 2026 International Widows Day celebration on Tuesday in Yola.
The Voice Media Trust (VMT NEWS) reports that International Widows Day is observed annually to highlight the challenges faced by widows worldwide.
The theme for the 2026 celebration is: “Justice, Dignity and Economic Power for Widows.”
Adams said many widows in the state were struggling with poverty, insecurity and social discrimination, which had worsened their living conditions.
She called on government, corporate organisations and well-meaning individuals to provide assistance to vulnerable widows across the state.
According to her, the association has more than 18,000 registered members spread across the 21 local government areas of Adamawa.
She also appealed to government to provide employment opportunities for qualified children of widows.

In his remarks, Nathan Musa, a former Chief Judge of Adamawa, pledged support for widows in the state.
Musa said serving and retired judges in the state would stand with members of the association in protecting their rights and dignity.
He assured them of support against all forms of discrimination and pledged to promote justice and peaceful coexistence.
VMT NEWS reports that the event featured advocacy visits and special prayers for peace, unity and harmonious coexistence in the country.
