FG screens 15, 000 youths for empowerment programme in Gombe – Official

The Federal Government has begun screening of 15, 000 youths in Gombe State for the T-MAX project, a Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programme.

Mr Musa Abdul, the Area Manager, Industrial Training Fund (ITF), Gombe State office, stated this while addressing some of the applicants at the commencement of the exercise in Gombe on Friday.

Abdul said no fewer than 106, 000 persons applied to participate in the programme in the state but the number was through due process reduced to the 15, 000 that were now undergoing screening.

He stated that the exercise showed the commitment of the Federal Government to uplift 100 million Nigerians out of poverty through skilled and entrepreneurship empowerment.

He stated further that the training would help address the challenges associated with unemployment, adding that the youth that would be trained would be empowered to become employers of labour.

“Skilled hand is a productive hand and the world is fast changing; today it takes skills to develop any nation.

“For us to be where the developed nations are, we must empower our youths with the necessary skills to bridge the manpower gaps and contribute immensely to the nation’s development,” he said.

According to him, 2, 000 youths would be trained in Gombe State after the screening.

On her part, Dr Aishatu Maigari, Gombe Commissioner for Education, said the training of youths by the Federal Government was complementing efforts of the state government in empowering its youths.

Maigari said youth empowerment was key to Gov. Inuwa Yahaya-led administration in view of the need to ensure that youths were empowered through skills to become entrepreneurs.

She stated that the state government would ensure that those trained by the Federal Government would be supported to overcome unemployment in the state.

While commending the Federal Government, Maigari appealed to participants to take advantage of the training to empower themselves towards impacting positively the state and nation.

One of the applicants, Saminu Obed appreciated the Federal Government for the initiative to train youths in the state.

Obed said the gesture would help address unemployment in the state and take the attention of youths away from drug abuse and crimes.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that T-MAX is part of the Federal Government’s initiative designed to lift 100 million Nigerians out of poverty by 2030.

The project seeks to empower 15,000 persons in Lagos, Ogun, Edo, Enugu, Kaduna, Nasarawa and Gombe States.
