Nigerian Army Assures Public Safety, as Minor Explosion Occurs at Ikeja Cantonment Farmland

289

The Nigerian Army has confirmed a minor explosion took place within the Nigerian Army (NA) Cantonment located in Ikeja, Lagos on Monday, April 1, 2024.

The explosion occurred on a farmland adjacent to the Mammy Market within the Cantonment premises.

The cause of the explosion is suspected to be linked to the burning of refuse and other flammable debris by a farmer who was tending to the farmland. Fortunately, there were no reported casualties resulting from the incident.

Given the recent clearance and certification of the Cantonment as free of unexploded ordnances, the public may have understandable concerns due to the historical context of explosions within the area. However, the NA aims to reassure the public that the situation is being effectively managed. The NA Engineers Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team has secured the area of the farmland to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the explosion’s cause.

Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, the Director of Army Public Relations, emphasized that residents in the vicinity should remain calm and assured them of their safety. The NA is actively monitoring the situation to ensure the well-being of the public amidst this incident.

As investigations continue, the Nigerian Army remains committed to maintaining the safety and security of the Ikeja Cantonment and its surrounding areas.
